Church History

In 1949, the congregation was established as the North Carolina Street Church of Christ, with the assistance of brothers such as Marshall Keeble and Minister Homer Black of Valdosta, Georgia.  As a result of years of dedicated work from many faithful saints, the late Minister Gregg was appointed as the first minister of this congregation.

The congregation grew under the leadership of several ministers.  In 1967, Zebedee Moore was appointed minister followed by Brother Herbert Rowe, Brother Nathan Carter and Brother Sampson Genus. As the church membership grew, Brother Carter made plans to build a larger edifice. The church purchased two acres of land located on 378 NW Gibson Lane. After the new sanctuary was completed in the early 90’s, the members of the church ceremoniously walked from the old building to the new building on one Sunday morning.

After Brother Nathan Carter retired, Brother Sampson Genus (1999-2004) became the minister. He was responsible for securing and building the church’s annex.  The annex currently houses the administrative offices, classrooms and dining hall. During this time, Brother David Watson was appointed as the assistant minister.

Following Brother Genus, Brother Carter, Dr. I.C. Spivey (2006 -2011) agreed to come out of retirement in order work with the congregation.  He is credited for enhancing the church business infrastructure, leading a campaign to pay off the annex building, and leading the effort to have a steeple erected on the church sanctuary.

Due to health reasons, Brother Spivey decided to step down as minister.  On July 3, 2011, Brother Adrian Bernard Harper, Sr., was appointed as senior minister.   On June 28, 2014, it was mutually agreed that Brother Harper would step down as the minister.  Since that time, Brother David Watson has served as Interim Minister.

On May 3, 2015, Brother Philip Mobley Sr. was installed as the Senior Minister of this congregation.  Brother Mobley comes to this congregation with a long track record on congregational and business management.

The Northside Church of Christ has a rich and diverse history of God’s people working to serve Him faithfully, and through His continued love, grace and mercy, we look forward to a productive future.
